Sony retracts claims of 60fps Watch Dogs on PS4

Watch Dogs – not necessarily better on PS4?
Watch Dogs – not necessarily better on PS4?

It doesn’t look like that the PlayStation 4 version of Watch Dogs will run at 60 frames per second after all, according to Sony’s website.

Having been announced almost exactly two years ago now Watch Dogs has had plenty of time to get itself into trouble, with various controversies over whether its graphics match up to the early promise of its E3 2012 tech demo.

But the latest PR snafu comes courtesy of Sony, who yesterday made the claim that the game would only be running at a super smooth 60 frames per second on the PlayStation 4.

‘Hack everything as you make your way through Chicago’s underground as you experience Watch_Dogs in a way that only PS4 can provide, at 60 Frames Per Second in 1080p’, is what the Sony website said yesterday.

Now the sentence has been cut short after the word ‘provide’, with no mention of frame rate or resolution.

Presumably a Sony copywriter got carried away and failed to check with Ubisoft, but it’s rare that any game runs at both the highest practical frame rate and resolution (for the current consoles) – let alone a large open world game as ambitious as Watch Dogs.

Ubisoft is yet to comment officially on the incident but with the game due out on May 27 we imagine they’ll just want to get to the part where it can speak for itself as quickly as possible.
