EA Sports UFC – a chart champion

The UK video games charts have a new number one, as EA’s new MMA game knocks Watch Dogs from the top spot.

The new UFC game is EA’s third number one of the year, after FIFA 14 and Titanfall both enjoyed stints at the top. There’s no indication from Chart-Track of how well it did compared to previous UFC titles, but it certainly seems to have made more impression on the chart than 2010′s non-licensed EA Sports MMA.

The PlayStation 4 accounted for 61 per cent of all sales, once again giving an indication of how many people in the UK own Sony’s next gen home console compared to Microsoft’s.

The only other new entry of the week was MotoGP 14, which managed to get to number 14 in the all formats chart; with the PlayStation 4 version the only one in the individual formats top 40, at number 23.

There was some other movement of note in the charts though, with Titanfall seeing a 10 per cent increase in sales – which usually implies retailer discounts.

Most of the other games saw sales fall though, with Watch Dogs down 41 per cent and Mario Kart 8 down 30 per cent.

2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil was down by 34 per cent and is already out of the top five in both charts. Given England’s exit from the tournament its sales are likely to only plummet further, with the game having made little impact on the chart and rarely outselling the much older FIFA 14.

Whether that will convince EA, and other publishers, that releasing last gen-only sequel was a bad idea only time will tell; but most are likely to put it down to the game simply not offering enough new features beyond the standard FIFA release.

This Friday is surprisingly busy for new releases, considering the time of year, with GRID: Autosport (360/PS3/PC), Sniper Elite III (360/PS3/XO/PS4), and Transformers: Rise Of The Dark Spark (360/PS3/Wii U/XO/PS4/3DS) all likely to give EA Sports UFC a run for its money.
