Destiny – something for the weekend

Bungie has announced the next two public events for Destiny, with a new vehicle-based Crucible PvP and more PvE bounties.

Following the Vault of Glass raid going live on Tuesday, today will see another new public event – in the form of Crucible mode Combined Arms.

Crucible is the competitive PvP (player vs. player mode), where most maps don’t feature vehicles. Combined Arms though is focused entirely on vehicular combat, with Fireteams of six people and increased heavy ammo drops.

It wasn’t live when we just checked but it’s primarily intended as a weekend special and will be switched off again on Sunday. Your rewards are the regular Crucible Gear, Crucible Marks, and Crucible Reputation.

On Tuesday September 23 through to October 6 The Queen’s Wrath content will be available. It’s a little less clear what this entails but it includes new bounties and ‘challenging mission modes’. The rewards are unique Legendary Gear and Unique Rare Gear.

After that the Crucible Salvage mode, which has already been available before and is similar to Call Of Duty’s Hardpoint, will come back later in the month. And then Iron Banner mode in October.

If you’re wondering why Bungie just can’t have all these modes available all the time (you know, considering you paid for them and everything) the official answer is to ensure a steady supply of new experiences every time you play.

The more cynical (i.e. accurate) answer is that they don’t want you to sell the game before you’ve had a chance to buy the downloadable content, so they – like any other games company today – need to keep finding ways to keep you playing.
