Perfect Dark - did it have the impact it should've?
Perfect Dark – did it have the impact it should’ve?

The evening Inbox has more advice for getting good at Bayonetta 2, as one reader asks after Lego Batman 3 on last gen.

Almost Perfect
A first person shooter set in the future. A mix of traditional and science fiction guns. Co-op for the entire campaign. A separate co-op challenge mode. Levelling up in multiplayer. Friendly computer-controlled team-mates you can give orders to. No, I’m not talking about the latest Call Of Duty.

I’m referring to a game I believe was so far ahead of its time and ambitious in what it offered. It was almost unplayable at times, as it stretched the console to breaking point, making the frame rate drop to possibly single digits! So even this frame rate nonsense isn’t new to consoles.

Whoever first described Modern Warfare as revolutionary clearly never played Perfect Dark on Nintendo 64.

Now playing: Gears Of War 3

GC: We’re not sure Perfect Dark has many parallels with Call Of Duty specifically but we do lament the fact that GoldenEye and Perfect Dark never had a more profound influence on first person shooters in general. Maybe Rare will get another roll of the die, now that they’re no longer stuck making Kinect games.

Next question
When do you think your review for Shenmue III will be up as I want to pre-order the day one collector’s edition with replica forklift and sailor’s hat.

PS: Which version of Shovel Knight between the Wii U and 3DS should I get, as I can’t decide between shinier graphics or playing on the go? I’ll go with whatever you decide, even if it’s based on flipping a coin.

GC: You haven’t read our Shenmue III review? We gave it 11/10 an everything! As for Shovel Knight, use your own coin.

Holy slowdown, Batman!
I just want to ask a question regarding Lego Batman 3. Will there be any considerable differences between the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4 versions? If not I won’t have to shell out for a new PlayStation 4 controller.

PS: Really enjoying Middle-Earth: Shadow Of Mordor, and I think the Nemesis system has huge potential.

GC: We haven’t played the PlayStation 3 version of Lego Batman 3, but all the recent Lego games have struggled to work well on the last gen consoles. If you have the choice we’d definitely go for the PlayStation 4 version.

Next gen mistake
Just a quick price alert for Irish Xbox One owners, PES 2015 is available to pre-order for €39.99 instead of €54.99 on the Xtra Vision website. It seems they have mixed up the pricing on the Xbox 360 and One editions. It works out at £31.28 if anyone in the UK wants to try order it from the website. Postage is free on the site.

Screw attack
RE: PlayStation 4 disc drive eject problem. Thank you for your reply Mr Fabulous. I didn’t have a small enough screwdriver to tighten the screw in the PlayStation 4 and so I had to borrow a screwdriver from a relative another day.

When I went to tighten the screw anti-clockwise I found that I could not tighten it anymore as it was already as tight as it could be, so I will have to keep an eye on my PlayStation 4 over the next few months before my one year warranty runs out, to see if the problem returns.

Money talk
RE: Lechuck. I only have 50+ sales on eBay, but I think Dark Anima X’s conclusion is overly pessimistic. PayPal commission is only 3.4% (+20p handling fee), not 7%, and standard Signed For 2nd Class postage (probably less than £4 unless the package is very heavy) will give you £50 compensation should something go wrong (in which case you’d make a loss, but it’s only a small risk).

For a purchase price of £60 and a sale price of £100, I estimate you’d make about £22 profit, a return of more than 33% on your initial ‘investment’. Given that you need to lock your money away for seven years to get above a 4% interest rate, financially it’s probably a good deal.

I do agree that it can be stressful selling expensive items on eBay though, so you definitely need to bear that in mind.

Catching up with Zelda
RE: My Nintendo Direct letter. I got so excited with so much awesomeness that my brain got mushed and I forgot how to count properly! Seriously though, Nintendo’s online store has the special edition for £44.99 which isn’t too bad.

Never played Zelda: Majora’s Mask, as I went from NES to DS. Also need to pick up The Wind Waker, as I missed that too – oops!

Too helpful
Just a note about Bayonetta on the easy difficulty levels. If anyone is having trouble on easy mode then it might be because of the Immortal Marionette item that gets automatically equipped when you switch to easy mode. What this does is that it enables automatic mode, where the game will automatically position Bayonetta for attacks and will execute random combos if you mash one of the attack buttons, so if you’re trying to learn how to play the game properly, this will probably mess you up like it did for me.

I found that it was much harder to play on easy with automatic mode enabled than on normal difficulty. To disable, just unequip the Immortal Marionette.

Platinum award
I’ve finally achieved the platinum trophy on Rayman Legends and can’t recommend the game highly enough. It’s a generous game with lots of content and is joyful throughout peaking with the end of world musical stages. For me though the game’s qualities are distilled in one of the timed stages where you have to reach three teensies strapped to fireworks in under 40 seconds to prevent them from being launched into the stratosphere.

The stage is a series of screens that have a mild puzzle element in working out the quickest route, mixed with a dose of twitch gaming in order to pull out the required time from the move set available. Chasing after quicker times became quite addictive and a buzz when finally reached.

This aspect is continued in the online challenges, which you have to play to get the platinum trophy. Although I remain solidly rubbish at most of the challenges there was one, The Never-Ending Pit, I got good enough at to win 20 diamond cups (I think you need to rank in the top 1% to get this) and even finished in the top ten a few times.

The games kept me entertained for three months and at around £20 now is well worth a punt.

Inbox also-rans
RE: J Sumo. will be getting this premium pack from Nintendo, available on their site exclusively. Great value and enter ‘Hylian3′ in the discount code box to get a free Zelda backpack. Don’t forget you can also expand memory via SD card slots and external hard drive.

RE: Gengar91’s kind offer of a download code. I don’t actually want the code myself but I always felt Red Dead Redemption had very good rain effects.

This week’s Hot Topic
The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by readers Smoking_Monkey (PSN ID) and mr.saveloy, who ask what’s the best and worst DLC you’ve ever played?

Given the controversy over the nature and price of Destiny’s downloadable expansions we want to know what DLC you think has added the most to its parent game and been the best value for money. And on the flipside, which has been the biggest waste of time and money?

Do you think DLC in general is a positive or negative influence on gaming and how much do you tend to buy? What aspects, such as withheld content and format exclusives, annoy you the most and what do you feel have been the biggest wasted opportunities? And what DLC has been so good you couldn’t imagine a game without it?
