The creators of Deus Ex: Human Revolution have released what seems to be the first screenshot from its sequel, using a new graphics engine.

Officially the screenshot above is simply from the new Dawn Engine, which Eidos-Montréal will be using as ‘the cornerstone to the development of the Deus Ex Universe projects at the studio’.

That means they still haven’t officially announced a new game, only the new engine – which apparently is a heavily modified version of Hitman creator IO Interactive’s Glacier 2 engine.

‘The technology behind any game is a key component in ensuring that gamers are able to develop both an emotional and visceral connection to what they are experiencing within the game world,’ said studio head David Anfossi.

‘We’ve worked tirelessly over the last few years developing this engine, building upon and improving both the visual and immersive artistry in our games. We truly believe that our engine will help us to strengthen both the gameplay and storytelling experiences we strive to create.’

Which is all very interesting but we’re still none the wiser what the screenshot is meant to be or when we’re going to hear about any actual games.

Back in October 2013 Anfossi first started talking about Deus Ex Universe, which was implied to be some sort of umbrella branding, or perhaps game, that would encompass a range of different console, PC, and mobile titles – as well as books and comics.

Prior to that publisher Square Enix were spotted trademarking the name Deus Ex: Human Defiance, which sounds like a sequel but still hasn’t been announced.
