After the trailer last week the first proper details have emerged on Atlus’ sequel, including info on the protagonist and the combat system.

Gamers are usually a tough crowd to please but we think almost everyone was impressed by the new gameplay trailer for Persona 5, and now we have some official comment on exactly how the game will work.

Perhaps the most important titbit is that Social Links are back, after some fans worried that they didn’t seem to be specifically mentioned in the trailer or its shots of the game’s menus.

A key element of the modern Persona titles, Social Links are based on your friendships with other characters – providing in-game bonuses the more you get on with someone and socialise with them outside of battle. They’ll have a new name in Persona 5 but the basic concept will remain.

Other details were revealed in Japanese mag Famtisu, as translated by Siliconera, with the game being set in Shibuya and other areas of Tokyo. The protagonist, who you as the player can name, is a second year high school student who moves to the city at the start of the new year.

Atlus are still being vague about the details and although the protagonist apparently has some sort of ungoing problem, that he’s always struggling with internally, they didn’t say what it was exactly.

In fact all three main characters (Anne and Ryuji are the names of the other two) have serious problems of their own, but it’s not clear if they’re similar in nature. Although it seems that they’ve all lots their homes recently, which is definitely not good.

Either way the protagonist and his friends all seems to be thieves of some sort, with the protagonist’s first Persona named Arsène, after French gentleman thief Arsène Lupin. Indeed the whole game is apparently going for a picaresque tone.

In terms of gameplay the battle system will still be turn-based, as was fairly obvious by the trailer, and each character will carry some sort of long range weapon.

The areas seen in the trailer were apparently hand-crafted, and not randomly generated, although there will still be a mix of the two styles of stage in the final game.

Oh, and the cat character is called Morgana.
