Sony has sold an extra 1.7 million PS4s in just two months, pushing the console’s global total to over 20 million.
It was only a few months ago that we were reporting that the PlayStation 4 had sold 18.5 million consoles worldwide, as of January 4.
But as of March 1 that total has jumped to a staggering 20.2 million, despite January and February traditionally being two of the quietest months of the years for sales.
According to Sony that makes it the fastest selling PlayStation hardware ever, with the console now available in 123 countries across the world.
‘We are so grateful for the enormous support from PlayStation fans worldwide, and we are truly humbled that gamers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play,’ said Sony Computer Entertainment boss Andrew House.
‘We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver unique and interactive entertainment experiences powered by the network and the PS4 system’s deep social capabilities.’

The Xbox One’s worldwide total is believed to be around 11.5 million, but Microsoft hasn’t given an update since November and even then it was 10 million shipped to retailers – not sold to customers.
Nintendo tends to be a bit more forthcoming with their sales, which they put at 9.2 million for the Wii U by the end of December. Although of course that includes a year’s head start on the other two consoles.
Although Sony seems to already have an unassailable lead this generation their position in the US is much closer than the global figures suggest, with the Xbox One outselling the PlayStation 4 in both November and December of last year.
Sales in the UK are also believed to be close, with the Xbox One also outselling the PlayStation 4 during November.
